What is a UK National Insurance Number?
The unique ‘NI number’ is a nine-digit number, comprised of two letters, followed by six digits and one last letter. It is a part of a UK Government run system and is written on an official letter when you receive it.
Why is it important to you?
The UK National Insurance number is unique to the recipient. The number is used to identify you to HM Revenue & Customs and the Department of Work and Pensions. It is uniquely helpful if you wish to study or work in the UK
A National Insurance number ensures the Government correctly records any contributions you make and if you are entitled to any benefits in later years. Your National Insurance contributions go towards the UK social security and the state pension system. Insurance (NI) is required by people employed, and self-employed, in the United Kingdom.
This unique ‘NI number’ keeps track of how much you have paid in tax, as well as how much contribution you have paid towards the cost of benefits in the UK. It is also used as a form of identification by many departments including the NHS healthcare and benefits systems.
